Sulzer CPT/ APT Case Cover Repair

The case cover of a cooling water pump exhibited significant erosion damage on its face. This erosion compromised the efficiency of the pump by causing it to recirculate fluid from the discharge back into the suction or behind the impeller, leading to increased power consumption with reduced output. If left unaddressed, the erosion damage could eventually cause leaks through the part, further exacerbating operational issues and potentially leading to more extensive and costly repairs.

Our Solution

Assessment and Machining
Material Replacement
Cost and Time Efficiency

Instead of opting for a new part with a long lead time, our first step involved a thorough assessment of the damaged case cover. We then machined out the poor surface to remove all traces of erosion. This process ensured that the surface was properly prepared for the next phase of repair.

After machining, we replaced the eroded surface with a hard, wear-resistant metal. This material is significantly more resistant to both wear and corrosion compared to the original metal. The use of this advanced material not only restored the structural integrity of the case cover but also enhanced its durability and longevity.

Our approach was both cost-effective and time-efficient. The repair process was completed in about a week, which is significantly faster than the lead time for a new part. Moreover, the cost of the repair was about half of what it would have been to purchase and install a new case cover. This provided our client with a reliable, durable solution without the extended downtime and higher costs associated with part replacement.
